"The compelling clarity with which a photograph recorded the trivial suggested that the subject had never before been properly seen, that it was in fact perhaps not trivial, but filled with undiscovered meaning."
(John Szarkowski, The Photographer's Eye, The Museum of Modern Art, 1964)

David Leshem's work is part of a long tradition of social documentary photography, focusing on subcultures and broader sociopolitical themes.

He approaches the ordinary and extraordinary with the same observational and matter-of-fact disposition. Examining the traditional, normative life, and reflecting on the contrast between what we aspire to and what we actually want or need.

Leshem's first monograph, Reliquarium (FotoEvidence, 2023), explores the complex military–civilian relationship in Israel and the social meaning of it.

Leshem (born Vilnius, Lithuania) lives and works in Porto, Portugal.
